Description: Franklin Elementary School is committed to providing a safe and inviting environment where all students are empowered to become respectful and productive citizens. Franklin Elementary School was established more than 100 hundred years ago in beautiful Mount Airy, North Carolina. We are a traditional school with grades Pre-Kindergarten through 5th. Our school is part of the Surry County School System. Franklin students go on to attend Meadowview Middle School and then North Surry High School or the Early College High School of Design.

A safe indoor and outdoor environment was not provided for the children. . The gate latch at the back left of the playground (facing away from the building) has a small metal rod protruding and extending inward from the gate, up to two inches from the gate, presenting a protrusion hazard. The stationary play structure was observed to have cracked plastic, sharp to the touch on the floor of the slide landing. This area was covered with a rubber mat; however, the children enrolled in the classroom remove this mat during play. An additional large crack in the plastic siding of the stationary play structure was observed. This crack appeared to have been previously repaired with a sealant of some sort; however, the plastic was observed to be split again and was sharp to the touch. A nonstationary playhouse was observed to have cracks sharp to the touch in three places on the structure. Two of these cracks had been covered with duct tape in the past; however, the cracks have spread and/or the tape has worn away. One crack had not been previously covered with tape. Teachers removed this playhouse from the playground during my visit. The edge of a toy kitchen in Space 402 was observed to be cracked, separated, and sharp to the touch. The teacher temporarily taped this section of the kitchen until a permanent fix is completed. | |||

A small bottle of Super Glue Gel was observed in a teacher’s drawer in Space 402, accessible to children, in unlocked storage.
