Description: Launched in 1965 as an eight-week summer program, Project Head Start quickly earned praise from educators, community leaders, and parents across the United States for its success in helping low-income and other disadvantaged pre-schoolers.
Designed to be community-based and to use community resources, every Head Start program offers the following services:
1. Education - Each child's individual needs are met, and ethnic and cultural characteristics of the community are served.
2. Health - Medical, dental, mental health, and nutritional services are provided by trained staff. At least one hot meal and a snack, equal to at least one-third of the daily minimum nutritional requirement, are provided.
3. Parent Involvement - Whether as a volunteer, a member of the policy council, or through participation in a class or workshop - all parents are encouraged to be involved with their children's education.
4. Social Services - Head Start Social Services staff works to network families with other community agencies to fill their family needs.
Last year, Head Start served 249 Jefferson County 3- and 4-year olds. Head Start classes are housed at St. Anthony’s School in Steubenville, Tiltonsville, Adena, Amsterdam, and New Alexandria.
