Description: In August 2006, Pūnana Leo initiated a Hiʻipēpē Infant Program located on the campus of Pūnana Leo o Hilo. The program has grown to include a site at Pūnana Leo o Waiʻanae. Infants and toddlers participate in a full-day Hawaiian Medium Education program. Curriculum and activities are based on the Kumu Honua Mauli Ola Hawai‘i educational philosophy, the Hawaiian language, as well as modern developmental strategies. Research shows that early education experiences filled with activities that enhance cognitive development and personal growth increase a child’s successful matriculation into other quality learning environments. We believe that children who start in the Hi‘ipēpē Infant Program will be better prepared for all facets of Hawaiian Medium Education from early childhood education to post-secondary education.
