ABC Daycare & Learning Center is a privately owned child care center. We provide services for all children ages 6 weeks through the age of 12. At ABC Daycare our mission is to provide quality care for children in an environment that is nurturing and fun! The Learning Center seeks to provide a safe environment that promotes health, age-appropriate development of the whole child. Our learning goals for our 3 year-old students revolve around introducing skills that we will later master in Pre-K and beyond. Our students rotate through 4 classes each morning. During language arts we are working on skills such as developing vocabulary and gaining familiarity with books. We’ll even begin introducing letter, sounds and sight words. Math and science are combined. In math we will work on skills like basic counting, learning shapes, and logarithmic functions (bonus points to parents that have read this far and let us know they are excited about their 3 year-old learning logarithmic functions). We want to enlarge our students’ world through science projects and activities. We feature a class called “Social Emotional Learning.” Here, we learn how to manage social and emotional behaviors. Our final rotation is an extra-curicular activity. Each day is different. On Monday we participate in dance class, Tuesday is children’s Spanish, Wednesday is children’s yoga, Thursday is music and Friday is gymnastics!
Head Start has had a strong impact on communities and early childhood programs across the country and is one of the longest-running programs to address systemic poverty in the United States. In 1964, the Federal Government asked a panel of child development experts to draw up a program to help communities meet the needs of disadvantaged preschool children. The panel report became the blueprint for Project Head Start. Project Head Start, launched as an eight-week summer program by the Office of Economic Opportunity in 1965, was designed to help break the cycle of poverty by providing preschool children of low-income families with a comprehensive program to meet their emotional, social, health, nutritional and psychological needs. Recruiting children age three to school age entry, Head Start was enthusiastically received by educators, child development specialists, community leaders, and parents across the Nation. In 1969, Head Start was transferred from the Office of Economic Opportunity to the Office of Child Development in the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare, and has now become a program within the Administration for Children and Families in the Department of Health and Human Services. Head Start has evolved into a program that provides education, health and social services. Education includes preschool education to national standards that have become de facto standards for all U.S. preschools. Health services include screenings, health check–ups, and dental check–ups. Social services provide family advocates to work with parents and assist them in accessing community resources. KRFDC’s Head Start program began in 1966. The earliest records indicate that in 1974 Head Start was funded at $435,424 and served 330 children (95 in Clark, 60 in Estill, 115 in Madison, and 60 in Powell County. At the time, the program employed 73 people. Since 1966, KRFDC Head Start services have expanded into Garrard, Jackson, Laurel, and Rockcastle counties. In 2009 KRFDC Early Head Start was funded to serve children in Clark, Estill, Madison, and Powell counties. Today, KRFDC’s Head Start funding is $6.7 million to provide Head Starts services to 856 children ages 3-4 in Clark (210), Estill (53), Garrard (46), Jackson (102), Laurel (117), Madison (175), Powell (128), and Rockcastle (25) counties; as well as Early Head Start services to 84 children birth-3 years-old in Clark (10), Estill (8), Madison (38), and Powell (28) counties. Currently, the program employs 115 people.

The Burrier Child Development Center (BCDC) is a licensed Type 1 Child Care Center and is an accredited early childhood program through the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). The purposed of this program is to provide two half-day early childhood experiences for preschool children and their families. It is utilized by the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences to provide pre-service learning experiences for Child and Family Studies Students. Learning opportunities are designed to emphasize the development of the whole child; socially, emotionally, physically, intellectually, linguistically, and creatively. Equally important are the learning experiences for adults who strive to support the growth and development of all children in the most appropriate environment with individual adaptions.
