While the facilities are clean and welcoming, and the preschool side seems to be well-run, the infant side is either understaffed or staffed by poorly trained adults. My granddaughter was actually kicked out of daycare because she was a fussy baby. She was 5 months old, and was incapable of manipulation or malicious intent, but she was blamed for causing a stressful work environment and her parents were notified two days before Christmas that they would need to find alternative daycare. She is, by the way, NOT an unusually fussy baby. She likes to be held and nurtured -- which is age appropriate. However, whenever I would come to pick her up, the caretakers would be bottle-propping rather than cradling. Older babies were always restrained in high chairs, bouncy seats, or walkers. No babies were being cuddled or interacted with. It was a safe environment, but not nurturing at all. We had difficulty finding a babysitter on short notice, especially over the holidays. When we did, the new sitter made a special point to tell me what a darling, sweet baby my granddaughter was. In contrast, the women at Caterpillar Corner told me several times she was a "little stinker." Well, in reality she was just a little baby who thrives on affection. At the time of her being kicked out, she also had a head cold and some gastronointestinal distress, which is not her fault, but made her cranky. She is also very particular about the temperature of her milk or formula, so she won't eat if it's too cold-- again, while it's a challenge, it's not an impossible task. They were either unwilling or unable to comfort her, and blamed her for upsetting the other babies. One time I was called to pick her up because she was "inconsolable" but by the time I got there, she was fast asleep and they had to wake her up for me to take her home. The caretakers just don't seem to actually know how to care for young babies. The older children seemed to be fine, but I was extremely disappointed in the level of care and competence displayed with the infants. There are very few choices for daycare in our area, but I would not recommend Caterpillar Corner for infant care. The only positive thing is it is clean and safe, but it is NOT nurturing.
