We believe that the first few years of life pave the way for children’s future education and it is so important to work with and nurture children. Because all children learn differently and are so diverse, we pay close attention to each child’s needs and gain knowledge of which way they learn best. Building Blocks Learning Center provides a daily program in which a child is encouraged to interact according to their individual ability. The rooms are divided into learning centers where children are encouraged to explore, create, inquire, and respond at their own level. Their environment is structured to provide activities for language development, manipulation of materials, developing routines and work habits, and expressing feelings and ideas. The children are grouped according to their developmental age, which enables the child to grow among his/her peers. The teacher plans and implements activities which are developmentally appropriate to ensure that the children are being challenged, yet are obtaining successful experiences to promote self-worth. The major components of the curriculum are: active learning, language, representing experiences and ideas, logical reasoning, and understanding time and space.
The philosophy here at Creation Station is based on our belief that all children share certain needs and have a drive to be self-confident, self-motivated individuals, seeking out an understanding of the world around them. It is our goal to provide a learning environment which will empower children and enhance self-esteem by creating an atmosphere where social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development can take place. This goal is met by providing a variety of activities and experiences which allow the child to be creative, to discover, and to solve problems. We will accept all children regardless of race, color, creed, sex, religious or ethnic backgrounds.

We believe that children are a trust from God. To keep and protect that trust, we first provide them with an increasing knowledge of their Savior in a safe, loving, and warm environment. We then work to stimulate social and academic growth through open-ended learning experiences such as guided exploration, hands-on activities, and teacher modeling. We also believe that children have individual needs and varying abilities that are not based solely on age. Therefore, the Shepherd’s Little Lambs Preschool program works to meet each child at his own level, which builds upon the child’s strengths. Finally, we believe that any successful early childhood program is based on a close working relationship with the families that it serves. We encourage and welcome family involvement, as it is an essential and vital component in the learning process.

In 2012 there were 85 children and their families that were served through the YWCA’s early childhood education center. The YWCA has partnered with Head Start since 2005, offering Head Start and Early Head Start services that monitor health, growth, learning and developmental milestones to income eligible families. The YWCA also collaborates with Early Childhood Family Education to provide support to parents with children in the YWCA Center. In the fall of 2011 we started a new project called Circles of Security with parents and caregivers at our Center. Focused on attachment theory and research, it works with the parents and child-care staff to give them new skills and tools to provide quality care and parenting. Successful attachment is the basis of future emotional and mental health in children and affects every aspect of their lives including the ability to learn. We are very excited about this project and are repeating it in 2012-13.
