CHURCH OF THE NATIVITY Greenwood, MS 38930 (662) 453-7786 |
Welcome to the website of the Church of the Nativity. As our mission statement says, we are a Christian community where all are welcome to worship, love, belong, grow, and serve. This is a true statement, for I have encountered here a spirit of welcoming that is truly warm and accepting of all, regardless of where you may be on life's journey. In addition to finding a warm welcome here, you can be reasonably assured that Nativity isn't going anywhere. We've been in Greenwood since 1881, through good times and bad, springtime floods, summertime heat, winter ice storms, through times of triumph and tragedy. This community of faith has deep roots in this city and county, and in the treasures of the Christian faith, so we will be here for you, come what may. The primary purpose for the church is worship. We gather here week by week to place our lives before the One who created us, redeems us, and fills us with purpose in life. We take worship seriously here. It is a physical, as well as spiritual, experience. We stand, we kneel, we make the sign of the cross, we bow, we sing, we speak, we listen, we ponder, we embrace one another, and we embrace the presence of the Lord in sacramental form. Worship is primary, but it's not all that we do. We have a lively fellowship, with lots of opportunities to get involved. Our church school program helps people of all ages to grow in faith and knowledge. Our music ministry offers a chance for those with such gifts to contribute to the life of the congregation, and those who are not so gifted to benefit! We are part of worldwide fellowship of Christians through our connection to the Anglican Communion as part of the Episcopal Church USA. Anglicans are the third largest Christian body on the planet, with churches on every continent, all connected by bonds of affection to the Archbishop of Canterbury, to whom we look as a symbol of unity, but not as a Pope who can tell us all what do do or how to think. In fact, you won't be told what to do or how to think here, except to love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength, and love your neighbor as yourself. And, oh what neighbors you'll find here! Some of us are liberal. Some of us are conservative. Some of us are more reformed in our practice of faith, while others of us are more catholic, in that we like lots of mysticism and pageantry in worship. There is a place for everyone at our Table. The best way to find your place is to come and see for yourself. |
