I have used this provider for less than 6 months

We recently enlisted Kellie as our provider, reserving a spot several months in advance. Her fee was $150 per month to hold the spot, even though she did not have a spot available at the time (she was not losing business due to holding our spot since she didn't have an opening for several months). We agreed to this when signing the contract so this is not an issue but did end up to be a large sum of money ($600) over 4 months. She had agreed (very willingly and without hesitation) to several of our requests including using cloth diapers (Bum Genius AIOs that we launder and replace daily), using a pacifier sparingly, etc. We noticed she had mostly girl toys since she has daughters and she voluntarily said she would have some more things for boys by the time we started.

She added us to her Facebook page after paying the first month’s deposit and the first thing we noticed is how many days she takes off. She had notified us of her holiday schedule and her two weeks paid vacation but she seemed to continually be taking unpaid days off, sometimes with little notice. My husband and I don’t get unpaid vacation at our jobs and discussed among ourselves that this much time off could be a problem for us.

When we started care, she was cheerful and happy when we arrived. She put our son in a very pink bouncer and had other pink baby things as well (not the biggest deal but not what she earlier stated). By the afternoon she was messaging me that she couldn't deal with the smell of our baby’s diapers. I thought this was strange. We provided a wet bag that the previous daycare had no issues with using. She had a ton of excuses from the fact that she uses two locations for diaper changes (not sure how this is different from using disposable diapers) to difficulties using the provided cloth wipes (she calls homemade but they are highly recommended on Amazon where we bought them). I suggested a diaper pail since we have no issues with odor at home using our pail and this was her biggest complaint. She refused to use a diaper pail, stating that she is unable to handle the smell of dirty diapers. She may be in the wrong business but I agreed to discuss it when I picked up our child.

When I arrived, he was lying on a pink playmat, using a pacifier which we agreed would only be a last resort. She had previously said that he was such a happy baby all day so this didn’t make sense but it’s not the biggest deal. We proceeded to discuss the diaper situation and I reminded her we had discussed this before we signed the contract and she agreed to use them. However, in person, she just said no she wasn’t going to use them because she can’t take the smell of dirty diapers. She had put them outside but I stated they can’t be frozen in the winter or they’d be ruined. She didn’t seem to care. She also proceeded complain three times that he had spit up on her. She seemed shocked. I thought, “she does know that she agreed to take care of a 5 month old baby so there would be diapers and spit up, right?”

I stood there in shock knowing this woman had agreed to all these things and taken our $600 and then refused to meet the terms that she agreed to on the very first day. I requested our money back. She gave me the two week advanced payment back but refused to refund our $600 deposit saying that it was in her contract that it was non-refundable. I said that she was the one refusing the agreed upon terms so that we should get our money back. She just said no and asked me to leave. She said I was raising my voice in front of her daycare kids but it was quite the opposite. I was in shock that she basically scammed us out of a large sum of money so I was not saying much at all. I left and did not return our child to this daycare since she clearly had no concern for the things we had agreed upon at the time of signing her contract.

The bottom line is that this woman very cheerfully agreed to terms before signing her contract that she refused to keep on the first day of care and kept all of our money. She had no regard for taking $600 from us and not holding up to any of her agreements. Plus she didn’t seem to understand what taking care of babies really entailed. I would’ve thought that a few dollars for a diaper pail is a small price to pay considering how much we had already invested.

We have since found Wee Pals Daycare in Owatonna and they are wonderful. We used them (while still paying Kellie her monthly reservation fee) until Kellie had her opening available. They have never had a problem using our cloth diapers. They are so good to care for our baby. He’s learning new things all the time and his teachers are so happy, cheerful, and accommodating. They cost a bit more but the quality is undeniable.
