So I could go on for days but this is the most manipulative lady I have ever worked for. Upon being hired, she told me I could choose an hourly or salary wage.
ILLEGAL FOR 2 REASONS:
1. People working the same positions at a company cannot be paid one hourly/one salary. Some people were hourly, some salaried
2. Our position title and tasks DID NOT qualify us to be exempt and salaried.
She takes advantage of employees being young and eager to work. She was trying to salary people at $17,000 and $19,000 a year when the LEGAL MINIMUM is $22,080. You will be picking up her slack (2-4 hour bank and Walmart runs) and working 10-12 hour days to not even make a livable wage.
She already couldn't afford the rate I desired, but she SEEMED nice so I took hourly. After gaining 106 hours on my first paycheck she advised me that we may have to move me to salary. Ok no biggie. A few weeks after she does that she also changes my hours from 40 hours a week to 45 hours a week, still salaried with no overtime mind you. So Monday-Friday 8:30-5:30 with one hour break, to 7:30-5:30 with one hour break.
She attempts to get people to sign contracts for 1,3, or 5 years claiming that people work better with ob security. Yes, for jobs that pay a livable wage. Signing a contract there, being locked into a ridiculous wage with long hours is not wise.
She makes excuses for her incompetency and blames employees to save face in front of parents. She talks about families' personal matters to employees. She has an excuse or reason for everything. If you tell her a conflict or a problem she'll boast about the many ways she herself has done it so why can't we, rather than actually helping.
She has many afterschool engagements/meetings that salaried people DO NOT GET PAID FOR. I remember working 7:30-5:30, having to wait til 6:30 for a meeting to start, and not leaving til 9:30. She stresses the importance of following a schedule that she doesn't even follow. Comes hours late, goes hours early as she pleases under the guise of 'handling business' 'going to the bank' as if she's incapable of appropriately scheduling these things.
You are expected to effectively come up and teach lesson plans to children aged 6 months-5 years (some of whom with an array of behavioral issues) in an environment she's created where children only listen to and respect her. The work is fruitless and unending.
My first week there my mother had surgery and she informed me missing a day would be automatic termination, a few months later her friend had a minor laparoscopic procedure and she was often no where to be found and 'at the hospital.'
She leads under the guise of having 'been an educator' for so long, but often sends and posts things chalk full of grammatical errors so I'm not sure how effective that is for teaching children.
Last but not least, after putting me on salary she advised me that if I didn't stay a year my last check would be short because she would take back her pay for all the holidays she paid me for. Little did she know, my mother is an HR director and we called her bluff, so she ended up giving me my last check.
STAY AWAY AT ALL COSTS. I PROMISE YOULL BE LOOKING FOR A JOB IN 6 MONTHS MAX. Don't believe me? Ask her about her turnover rate and why it's so high.
This is a quality operation! "Learning Academy" is an appropriate description for them. Providing day care services is a small part of what they do. They connect with and grow children. The owner has a passion for what she does and it manifests in how she cares for the students.
