The tragedy in Connecticut hits very close for all of us and gives us reason to reflect on our own procedures. This weekend staff was provided information about how to respond with students and updated again on Monday.
Fruitport Community Schools and Shettler Elementary work diligently throughout each year to ensure that we practice fire drills, tornado drills, bus safety drills, whole school evacuations, and a variety of lockdown drills. Each of these is practiced with the understanding that we need to practice as if an emergency was taking place, so that we can be prepared to the best of our abilities. All staff have concise plans for each room that outline what to do in a variety of events. This information is then reviewed by staff and as a district crisis team multiple times annually.
Our crisis response plans have been reviewed by Fruitport Township, Muskegon County, and the Michigan State Police and as new information is deemed "best practice" we modify and adjust to these new guidelines. Our goal in everything we do is to ensure the safety of all students, staff, and parents within our building.
We have a variety of security measures in place including cameras inside and outside of the building. As a district crisis team we review monthly the measures we have in place and work to improve them.
You should be receiving a letter home with your child today as part of our reflection on the recent events and steps we are taking as a district to help ensure the safety of all students and staff. Included in this letter is information about how best to help students through difficult times. The recommendations from the experts in child psychology is that we provide as close to a normal environment as possible for our students. We have a counselor, social worker, and school psychologist on staff to assist students if they are having a difficult time dealing with the recent events or other events that may occur throughout the year.
One small change that parents will experience is that we will reinforce our expectation that all parents sign in at the office before proceeding into the building for any reason. We understand this may take an extra moment or two but it will help us know who is in the building and limit disruptions to our classes. We appreciate your understanding as we continue to work towards improved safety.
Our goal at Shettler Elementary (Fruitport Community Schools) is to provide a safe learning environment with a focus on high academic standards. We believe our focus on safety every day and throughout the year allows for this experience for all of our students.
I hope this helps alleviate some of your fears and concerns. As we enter the holiday season please take a moment to reflect and give your child a hug as they are truly the most precious gift we have.
