Description: In 2002, founding Pastor Michael Ola and several people from the NewLife~Suffolk loaded up bags of groceries and bought Christmas presents and took them to housing projects on the east side of Suffolk. Out of this action was born a vision to reach the city of Suffolk and the world by serving others with no strings attached. We call it servant evangelism, or SE for short. It’s a simple, straightforward approach to sharing God’s love in practical ways.
Since 2002, the Suffolk Resource Center (SRC) has successfully helped people in Suffolk who are living in poverty to positively change their lives. Last year, SRC provided 8,000 units of service to people who qualified either by income or by being a member of a designated special needs population. Community need continues to rise, especially for emergency food assistance. SRC operates seven different programs including food bank, public transit and dial-a-ride, weatherization/energy assistance, transitional housing, Senior Care, Family and Individual Counseling and youth outreach. Each of these programs is critical to the health and well-being of many of our low-income citizens; and as such to the community as a whole.
SRC services are available to all low-income residents of Suffolk. However, the fee-based SRC Transit program is available to all area residents in need of public transportation. The SRC staff consists of 3 FTE, 2 PTE, 2 temporary staff, and 2 bus drivers, supported by a cadre of community volunteers. The strong, active and diverse 12-member Board of Directors includes representation from the Latino and Native American communities, as well as low-income clients. Community collaboration is a key part of agency success.
