Here at Hockanum Valley we pride ourselves on developmentally appropriate practice. Our idea of developmentally appropriate is a small classroom size (10 children), two qualified instructors, play-based learning and the individualization of lessons. With this formula, we believe the optimum classroom environment is achieved for children of preschool age.
The primary objective of our program is to provide a safe, caring, healthy and secure environment that promotes the emotional, physical, psychological and social growth of each child through developmentally appropriate practice. This includes providing and/or referring parents and families to appropriate services to support and enhance these objectives as needed.
We are committed to supporting, honoring and incorporating cultural and linguistic diversity within the program. We understand that all children develop at their own pace. We try to individualize our lesson plans and daily activities to suit every child's needs.
We are a nonprofit Child Care and School Readiness Program. We are funded by the State Department of Education and the Connecticut Department of Social Services. The center is licensed by the CT Department of Public Health and certified for food service by the North Central Health District. The program is accredited by the National Association for Young Children (NAEYC). We serve up to 28 children ages 3 years to 5 years from the towns of Vernon and Ellington; occassionally surrounding towns and is open to all children in those communities.
The Staff consists of an Executive Director, a Head Teacher, 6 additional teaching staff and a cook. Volunteers from UConn community programs also participate. A Board of Directors governs the policies and procedures of the center. The Board consists primarily of current and former parent representatives but may include members from the community at large.
