Description: The Academic Athlete originated in 1981 and was originally intended for recognition of student athletes that maintained a 3.0 gpa. The corporation recognized students in as many as 37 states through the years. In 2000 the Academic Athlete reshaped its' vision with the ability to reach a larger audience via the web which gave the corporation a greater chance of reaching students for recognition. The Academic Athlete added categories for non-athletes and younger students so that they may be recognized. The vision that only athletes should be rewarded for their hard work fell to the side and the new vision that every student that worked hard in school and spent time participating in extracurricular activities should be recognized.
In 2001, the Academic Athlete Plus was born and was intended to be the scholarship arm of the Academic Athlete. The corporation applied to be a non-profit corporation with the IRS and was awarded a 501 (c)(3) status. To date our program has awarded over $6,000 in scholarships to students all over Texas.
The Academic Athlete team now noticed that there was a strong need for a "quality" after school programs in local school districts throughout Texas. The current after school programs were only "daycare's" and "babysitting" services. The team felt that there was much more that they could do with an after school program than what was currently being offered. Thus, the Academic Athlete Plus After school Program was born which added a nice service to the scholarship arm of the Academic Athlete.
On August 18, 2003 the Academic Athlete Plus After school Program opened its first two programs in the Mansfield Independent School District located in Mansfield and Arlington, TX. Each year the program continues to grow and in 2009 added Fort Worth ISD to the list of districts the program serves.
