Eastside Community Learning Center is proud to say that most of out infant/todllers become our preschoolers than after schooler's. I was visited by a set of twins 15 years old now but they attended at age 3 until going to middle school. The young man is enrolled in the ROTC program and his sister has already been out of the states on a leadership tour. Jesse S. Bobo Elementary is a Title I school located just inside the city limits of Spartanburg on the southwest side of town. The school opened in 1972 and is named for Mr. Jesse S. Bobo who served on the Spartanburg County Board of Education for many years. It is a one-story brick structure located on an eighty-acre site on Powell Mill Road, just off U.S. Highway 29. The conveniently located school serves a community of approximately six and a half square miles. The community is bordered on the south side by U.S. Highway 29 and on the north by Interstate 85. Over the past three decades, the community has expanded with a large number of apartment complexes being built within the boundaries of the school community. In the early 1970's and 1980's, our community was comprised mainly of middle and upper class families. As housing in our attendance area has become more affordable, our school has begun to serve a more transient student population from a wide range of socio-economic levels. The key defining features of Jesse S. Bobo Elementary School includes a devoted staff and innovative programs. It employs caring, dedicated staff members who go beyond the call of duty to ensure that the educational, social, and emotional needs of all students are met. The staff strives to provide an environment that is safe, nurturing, and conducive to the development of the total child. Many supplementary programs are in place to help students reach their potential and become life long learners who are productive citizens in our ever-changing society. Jesse S. Bobo currently serves two four year old kindergarten classes, three five year old kindergarten classes, four first grade classes, three second grade classes, three third grade classes, three fourth grade classes, and two fifth grade classes. Students attend special area classes in Computer Lab, Spanish, Music, Art, PE, and Media Center. Resource, Speech, LEAP, and Corrective Reading classes enhance student needs in those areas. Gifted students attend Horizons weekly. At the beginning of the 2010-2012 school year, Jesse S. Bobo had 592 students registered, including the 179 at the Child Development Center that are counted as a part of our school. The breakdown by ethnicity is as follows: 45% African American, 21% Caucasian, 18% Hispanic, 3% Asian, 3% American-Indian, 6% Two or More Races, and 2% "Unclassified."
