About the Provider

Description: Carmelo the Science Fellow has been teaching children in Brooklyn for the past 15 years. During this time, he has educated thousands of children and he has come to realize the importance and effectiveness of introducing a science based curriculum to his students. Young children starting preschool bring a sense of wonder and curiosity about the world. Whether they are handling gerbils, flying kites, melting ice cubes, or excavating for fossils, children are engaged in discovering out how the world works. The Brooklyn Preschool of Science will bring this curiosity and wonder to life, and use it to provide a foundation for meaningful math, language, and literacy development.

Utilizing and implementing a hands-on science based curriculum will provide young children with early experiences in science and math that will pay off with increased achievement, literacy, and process skills. Positive attitudes toward science during the preschool years, and positive attitudes toward learning have been shown to contribute to future success in and out of school. The Brooklyn Preschool of Science will foster and develop this love of learning with science at the center of our integrated curriculum.

Early science and math experiences are crucial because they can support language and literacy development. With science at the core of our learning, we will support vocabulary development by exposing children to a variety of new words. While the preschooler is actively engaged, they will describe things by using words like observe, predict, experiment, measure, and so on. They will learn nouns like habitat, pupa, bubbles, matter-and use adjectives to describe the properties of things-small, sticky, wet, rough, and bigger than or less than. The Brooklyn Preschool of Science will use science experiences to ensure vocabulary gains for our preschoolers.

The Brooklyn Preschool of Science is not trying to reinvent the wheel. We are just trying to ensure that our preschoolers will get the opportunity to be who they are, and experience learning in the most natural of settings, and that is being a natural inquisitive scientist. When given this opportunity, and capitalizing on this fascination, their development will grow faster than you can ever imagine.
