Rose Rock School

Rose Rock School

Norman, OK 73069 | (405) 412-3583
In 2007, Shanah Ahmadi enrolled in an early childhood and human development training (Lifeways of North America). Shanah found the principles of the Lifeways approach to resonate strongly with her own observations and instincts that: -Childcare programs can closely resemble a warm family setting. – Children benefit from forming strong bonds with consistent caregivers, rather than caregivers changing sporadically. -Children are best prepared for formal schooling by having the magic of childhood left intact, their sense of wonder stimulated, and their capacity for creative play fully realized. In January of 2010, Shanah opened an in-home childcare facility under the name The Purple House. The Purple House sought to provide an alternative to the institutional environment of many childcare facilities. The goal was to create a comforting atmosphere providing many natural opportunities for learning. Some of the basic tenets included daily interaction with the natural world, meals prepared with whole organic foods, and the inclusion of the children in the daily tasks of gardening, meal preparation, and care for their learning space. In September of 2010, a Kindergarten building was added to The Purple House property. The curriculum of the Kindergarten continued to be based on our founding values and naturalistic approach. The first year of the Kindergarten was very successful and, again, it became apparent that another expansion would be necessary in order to meet the needs of the greater community. In February 2011, Shanah, helped by many of the school children’s parents and community members, incorporated the school into a non-profit organization (Rose Rock School Foundation). A board of enthusiastic parents and teachers was formed to envision the next phase of the school and assist with outreach and fundraising. In the fall of 2011, we hired Frances Whalen, who completed her LifeWays training the following summer. She moved to a full-time position shortly after graduating from the LifeWays program and stayed with us through May 2014. Then in January 2012, Rose Rock School purchased a large house on four acres of land in the center of Norman (1515 West Main Street). Concurrently, our organization earned over $24,000 for the expansion project. Parents and Board members volunteered at fundraising events (art auctions, yard sales, and workshops), and we directed 10% of our monthly income (tuition) into the expansion fund. Rezoning the White House- as it came to be known- took an arduous two years. In the meantime, we brought on our faculty-in-residence, Acacia Moore, and her family. Acacia began child care in the White House in Fall of 2013, with Frances, as rezoning came to a close and we took the final steps in the planning process of our construction. That summer construction commenced and the faculty and staff of Rose Rock expanded by four- Abbie Broughton (lead teacher), Rachel Connaughton (assistant teacher), Sarah Warmker (cook/substitute), and Victoria Eller-Moore (cook/substitute). As construction has continued, classes for the 2014-2015 school year have been held at both the Purple House and White House. Parents, students and staff alike have eagerly worked and waited for both classes to be joined under one roof in the White House.

Norman, OK 73069 | (405) 360-1789
Bienvenido a Carol’s House! We are very proud of our thirty year family-owned daycare tradition, providing young children a place to be children. Our philosophy for each child, as seen in our daycare’s daily activities, is to encourage: respect for each other reverence for our earth understanding of others’ rights and feelings self-reliance safety and good health habits cooperation and kindness between children of many ages self-control cognitive achievement curiosity and an excitement for learning Although the primary focus is on affective learning, we also provide high quality cognitive learning opportunities through play, games, songs, and small and large group learning activities. Play materials inside are constantly being rotated to encourage children to play in the science area, the dress-up room, the library, the art area, and the games and large motor area. In many locations outside in our yards, climbing and riding toys give children the opportunity to develop large motor muscles. Imaginative play is encouraged both inside and outside and, although we follow a daily routine, children have lots of time to think, look at books, talk to each other, play pretend, explore, and investigate. We have a wonderful mix of cultures at our daycare. Children from many countries share their customs and languages. Parents and children enjoy our annual family picnic and find similarities and differences in cultures. From sign language to Chinese, Carol’s house children learn numbers and songs in a variety of languages. We provide morning and afternoon snacks every day and prepare a nutritious lunch Monday through Thursday. Children bring their lunches on the first and third Fridays and pay $2.50 for pizza on the second and fourth (and fifth when applicable) Fridays. For many years we provided after school care for elementary school aged children. We also allowed families to determine individual schedules. Recent changes have forced us to change our pay rate to a flat, monthly, full-time fee. Carol’s House is open from 7:45 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. We are closed one week each summer and on major holidays. Children think Carol’s House is a great place to have fun as they learn. Carol, Dan, and Noah work hard to help children develop into interesting, competent, caring people. If you are interested in having your child or children come to Carol’s House, please let us know! We will be happy to provide more details.
